Holy Holidays and Stuff to Keep You Occupied

March 20th, 2008

Hello everyone! Today is the first day of the Holy Week holidays here in the Philippines, and for the more religious folk, these days are time for prayer and the sort. But for the non-religious people like myself, this week is just a very long holiday. I have 4 days (including the weekend) to waste on YouTube, blogging, video games, and of course, comics. As you know, I took a short break this week from updates so I can catch up on making new strips for next week, and I promised you guys that I will be back to blog about anything I find interesting on the net for you to pass the time on while waiting for the next update. So here I am again, the links after the jump!

Starting April I will be starting a new quest, something completely different from what I’m doing right now, and that is learning to play the violin. I’ve always loved music and have been wanting to learn how to play the violin since college, so just a few days ago, I found myself the perfect violin instructor and now I’m finally going to be able to realize one of my mini-dreams of playing violin! Anyway, while day dreaming about violins, I stumbled upon this video of violinist Paul Dateh, and man, is he awesome. Violins aren’t just for classical music!

Music geekiness aside for a bit, did you know that Threadless is having a sale? T-shirts start from the low low price of $9. I ordered a “What Would McGuyver Do?” shirt from them just last year and I love love love it! (Multiple words for emphasis). I’m not an official endorser of Threadless or anything but I really do recommend their shirts because they have a ton of unique and very creative designs and I really can’t get enough of them (really, I can’t, because I’d go broke). I personally like this, this, this, and this. Anybody want to buy me some shirts?

Sorry, but I’m feeling a little too musical this week, so my next few shares are all about music. If you’ve read some of my previous posts, you’ll know that I’m a big fan of American Idol and season 7 contestant Michael Johns. I was so so happy to hear him sing my favorite Beatles song (ever) called Across the Universe that I ended up searching the net for renditions of “Across the Universe”.

So first up, let’s take a listen to the original rendition from the Beatles themselves:

Next up, Michael Johns’ rendition:

Next is Across the Universe from the movie of the same name (speaking of which, if your a Beatles and/or a fan of musicals, then this is a must watch!):

And here’s another rendition of the song that I’ve just seen today (but I think this was made for the movie I Am Sam. If it’s is, then I’ve heard it before):

I hope you enjoyed the videos and the links I’ve shared today, I will be going back to the drawing (and writing!) board now to whip up some new DWP strips. Hopefully these kept you entertained for the time being, I will be back on Monday and you’ll find out what happens to Parker after he confesses to Cel about stealing her diary.

Dang, Paul’s got an electric violin. Hey, trust me, if you don’t have a talent for playing the violin or such an instrument, than don’t. I played viola for about 1 year and I got way good way fast, but it is HARD. Trust me. That guy has had a lot of practice to get that good. And if he hasn’t, then he’s a prodigy.

Wow! I really love the electric violin. Paul sure can play it! If you like non-traditional violin/fiddle music, you should look up two very different groups. First, Great Big Sea (http://www.greatbigsea.com/) does some pretty amazing things to traditional East Coast Canadian music. I recommend checking out their albums entitled “Up” and “Play” to start. Second, there is a group called Trans-Siberian Orchestra (http://www.trans-siberian.com/index-main.php) who does these great Rock-Operas with Christmas Themes. Look for the songs called “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24″ and “Wizards in Winter” among others!
